Opposition MP Viam Pillay has called on Government to urgently announce a guaranteed cane price, warning that delays in payments are pushing Fiji’s sugar industry toward crisis.
Mr Pillay said farmers are facing severe financial strain as they await payments under the Master Award system.
“When the hands that feed this nation are forced to beg for their own hard-earned money, the system isn’t just broken—it’s a betrayal,” he said.
He described the situation as unprecedented, noting that delayed payments have left farmers uncertain at a critical time as preparations begin for the 2026 crushing season.
“Never in the history of the Master Award have we seen payments delayed and mismanaged like this,” he said.
Mr Pillay said farmers, cooperatives and lorry owners are struggling to meet bank repayments and daily expenses.
“Banks and creditors are knocking on doors… local shops are cutting off credit because the Government is withholding payments,” he said.
He warned rising global fuel and input costs will further strain the industry.
“With fuel hitting $100 a barrel… every cost for the coming season—from fertilizer to transport—is going to skyrocket,” he said.
The Opposition is demanding the immediate announcement of a guaranteed price.
“You promised the farmers $110 before the election. Announce a guaranteed price… so they know where they stand,” Mr Pillay said.
He also called for no deductions from March and April payments and urged early negotiations with stakeholders.
“The time to act is now,” he said.
