There are opportunists out there, says divisional police commander West senior superintendent of police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa.

SSP Vaisewa said these were individuals who were responsible for a number of criminal activities.

“They are out there within the community,” said SSP Vaisewa.

“There could be an opportunist who is doing these criminal activities and this why we need the community to assist us in identifying them.”

SSP Vaisewa said community policing continued to be an important aspect of their work to catch criminals.

“They assist us by providing us with relevant information and also share it with their trusted neighbours.

“The victims and the perpetrators are living within our communities and it is about identifying them.

“The Police Force needs members of the public to also play their part and be involved in looking out for their neighbour’s properties especially for those who are away for some time and for property owners to at least inform their neighbours that they are going out.

“The police cannot be everywhere. That is why we are also highlighting our community policing efforts.

“We need them to at least take ownership of the security of their properties and the properties of their neighbours.”

He said criminal activities within the Western Division decreased over the past two months.

“We have noticed a decrease towards last month and at the start of this month. “I believe that it is to do with the collaborative approach that we are taking not only within the force but also with our communities.”
