Fiji Taxi Association president Raben Singh says they will await word from the Land Transport Authority on how the open taxi rank system will work.

Mr Singh said there had yet to be consultations carried out on the new system that will come into effect on April 25.

“We have not had any consultations with LTA on the open base system, so we are waiting for that to happen,” he said.

“A lot of our members do not know how the new system will work, so they need this consultation

. “We have heard the budget announcement and that the new system will come into effect later next month.

“Until then, we want to know from the authorities how it will work.”

During the Revised 2021-2022 National Budget address, Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the introduction of the open base system was the most significant change for the taxi industry in 33 years.

He said Fiji had a total of 4222 valid taxi permit holders who would now operate from one of the 453 open taxi ranks.

He said out of the 453, there were a total of 264 existing taxi ranks while 135 new ones would be introduced.
