Strong growth in visitor numbers from the United States has highlighted the success of Fiji Airways’ first year operating direct flights to Cairns, with industry leaders calling the service a “game changer” for the region.
Dignitaries gathered at Cairns Airport on Friday to mark the anniversary, crediting the route with unlocking new opportunities in tourism, trade, education and community engagement.
Cairns Airport Chief Executive Officer Richard Barker said the service had played a key role in boosting international arrivals.
“Last year, the United States took the title as our region’s largest international source market… This growth was supported by Fiji Airways’ seamless, one-stop connectivity, which reduced the flight time to just 16 hours,” he said.
Mr Barker also highlighted the benefits for the Fijian diaspora in Cairns.
“Fiji Airways has enabled more frequent family visits while saving significant travel cost and time,” he said.
Fiji Airways Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Paul Scurrah said the route had strengthened ties between Fiji and northern Australia.
“We are proud to mark one year of our Cairns service, which has strengthened connections between Fiji and Tropical North Queensland and supported tourism, trade, and community links,” he said.
To celebrate the milestone, Fiji Airways has launched limited-time discounted fares, while Cairns Airport will plant 365 native trees as part of a joint environmental initiative inspired by the airline’s sustainability programme.
The Cairns route continues to serve as a key gateway, connecting travellers from North America and beyond to the Pacific through Fiji.
