Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka says they are looking at extending tsunami sirens around Viti Levu.

Speaking at the National Disaster Awareness week media conference in Suva yesterday, Mr Ditoka said at the moment their early warning tsunami sirens would only reach Lami.

“We are going to extend it,” he said.

“The intention is to extend it right around Viti Levu.

“And to the outer islands as well. “For the time being what we are resorting to is the broadcast via radio and also mobile phone messages.

“That’s what we had to resort to at the moment.

“So we have to take it one step at a time and we are working with all our partners and including our international partners in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) on how we can organise that. It’s a work in progress.

“We are looking at in the very near future and the second phase of the project is to reach up to Rakiraki.

“And after that it goes around the island.”
