The security forces in Fiji have been encouraged to embrace better representation of all diverse groups in the country, including women and minority racial groups.

While speaking to over 200 recruits during the Fiji Police Force Batch 66 passing-out parade at Nasova yesterday, Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua said there was currently an imbalance in terms of representation.

“In Fiji, we cherish our rich tapestry of cultures, and it is crucial that our police force reflects this in its diversity,” he said.

“I urge the Fiji Police Force to strive for fair representation of all our communities, especially our Indo-Fijian brothers and sisters. It is vital that every segment of our society sees themselves represented in those who protect and serve them.

“This principle of representation should be a guiding policy not only for the Fiji Police Force but also for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

“We have witnessed an imbalance, with too many i-Taukei in the force. It is time we address this and ensure that our security forces mirror the diversity of our nation. Furthermore, gender equality within the force is not just a goal; it is a necessity.”

Mr Tikoduadua said women should constitute at least half of the service.

He added the inclusion of women in our security forces brought unique perspectives, skills, and strengths that were essential for the holistic protection and understanding of our communities.

He also encouraged all recruits to uphold the values of inclusivity, fairness, and equality while carrying out their duties.

“As you embark on this path, remember that you are not just enforcers of the law; you are pillars of the community, exemplars of integrity, and the embodiment of the principles upon which our society is built.

“Wear your badge with pride, perform your duties with diligence, and uphold the values of justice, fairness, and compassion.”
