‘On top of the world’ | Labasa College crowned schools football champ

Subrail Park came to life last night as parents, students and fans of Labasa College stormed the ground with their flags and cheers to hug their under-19 players who beat Kamil College 1-0 to win the Digicel Fiji Secondary Schools Inter District Championship.

This victory was the second title for Labasa College after their U-17 side defeated Vashist Muni Collage 1-0 in the final.

The open girls grade remained with Xavier College which has won the title consecutively on three ocassions – 2019, 2020 and this year.

The U15 soccer trophy travels to the Sugar City with Lautoka Central College winning 2-0 against Labasa College.

Labasa College coach Roneel Ram was a happy man, describing the victory as an achievement that has put them on top of the world.

“Discipline is the reason we won and I thank the boys for their obedience and discipline throughout the season,” he said.

“This is the first time for Labasa College to win a national title in a soccer tournament.

“We are on top of the world right now. We have come this far because of our supporters who have been with us throughout.”

Ram said their victory showed that soccer among students in rural areas continued to improve and get better every year.

Kamil College coach Mohammed Khan said despite the loss, being the second best in Fiji for secondary schools soccer was a great ending.

“We are happy with the boys performance and they played their hearts out,” he said.

“We thank all our supporters back home for their support.”
