ATHLETICS Fiji is looking at developing more athletes who could represent the country in the future.
The Shop N Save Athletics Fiji weekly competition which started earlier this month continues to gather a lot of participants.
Organisers have started looking at athletes for the Oceania Championship which will be held in Fiji in July.
Athletics Fiji chief development officer Joe Rodan Jr, said development would be their priority this year.
“Over the last two years, our focus had been on development at grassroots level,” he said.
“When we get it right at the development stage, it is going to be for a long term and the kids going to be in the system for long. Before we used to focus on the elites, once they leave we got stuck. Now with the competition at the different age group, we are getting better.”
The children are now exposed to competition every week at the ANZ Stadium in Suva and there are plans to start in the West soon with the opening of the new tracks at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
“We need to develop young athletes and not so much depending on the Fiji reps who had been carrying the torch for many years. A time will come when they will retire and have their families,” he said.
