IVAN Kumar is quietly becoming a key figure in Bula FC’s impressive debut season in the OFC Professional League.
Operating as the team’s only recognised specialist left-back, Kumar has provided stability on the edge of defence as Bula rise into the top tier of the competition.
With the side now preparing for a crucial round in Auckland, his role continues to grow in importance.
“I’m playing as a left-back and mostly as a left wing-back as well,” Kumar said.
His ability to adjust between defensive and attacking responsibilities has been a key part of Bula’s tactical approach this season.
However, the 29-year-old believes the position is still evolving with every match.
“Every game has different tactics… it’s all about learning every game and during training,” he said.
That mindset reflects Bula FC’s campaign so far.
After sitting as low as seventh earlier in the season, the team has steadily climbed into the top four — a turnaround built on consistency and resilience.
“It was a long journey. It started from December and it was not easy, but we slowly picked up.”
His recent appearance against Auckland FC highlighted his value to the squad.
Introduced late in the second half, he helped see out the match as Bula secured a result that confirmed their place among the competition’s leading sides.
“We managed to secure in the top four, and now it’s about the next game in New Zealand,”
With the season entering a decisive stage, Kumar acknowledged there are still areas to improve on, particularly around fitness and managing injuries within the squad.
“Some of the players have injuries, so we’ll work on that and get ready.”
Despite those challenges, there is growing belief within the team, especially following a key win over one of the competition’s top-ranked opponents.
“If we need to get something, we need to work hard for it. The boys never put their heads down — we just kept pushing.”
As Bula FC prepare for their next test in Auckland, Kumar remains focused on maintaining momentum — and delivering for the supporters.
“For the fans in Auckland, come out and support the boys. We’ll try to give our best and improve.”
For now, his role remains clear — hold the line, adapt when needed, and continue contributing to a season that is quickly becoming one of the most promising by a Fijian club on the regional stage.
