WALU Bay in Suva was brought to a standstill yesterday after an oil leak at the Petro Oceania Fuels Terminal along Foster Rd disrupted normal activities in the area.
Businesses in Suva’s main industrial area were forced to close, with workers advised to evacuate their premises as a safety precaution.
In a statement, the National Fire Authority (NFA) said Syria and Argo streets in Walu Bay were closed until further notice.
NFA crews were on site working to contain the spill and ensure public safety.
Motorists and pedestrians were advised to avoid the affected area and use alternative routes.
Police cordoned off the entrance to Foster Rd from Suva, as well as the roundabout at the junction of Reservoir Rd.
Traffic from Suva was diverted to Edinburgh Drive, while vehicles coming from the Lami side were diverted to Reservoir Rd.
The NFA advised the public that updates would be provided once the roads were reopened to traffic.
Meanwhile, as a full investigation continued into the cause of the fuel leak at the Petro Oceania Fuels Terminal in Walu Bay, Suva, National Fire Authority acting chief executive officer Joel Israel said the situation was under control.
“Further assessments and mitigation measures are in progress,” Mr Israel said.
Mr Israel said the National Disaster Management Office had also been advised of the leak and was monitoring the situation.
