A 34-year-old Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Inspector has been charged with one count of Manslaughter Arising from Breach of Duty, in relation to the death of a 21-year-old woman who fell from a Ferris wheel in Suva in June 2023.

The charge, laid under Sections 240 and 241(5) of the Crimes Act, has been endorsed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

The accused is expected to appear in the Suva Magistrates Court today.

Police say efforts are ongoing to locate a second accused linked to the case.

The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations had announced an immediate ban on all Ferris wheel operations in Fiji until further notice following the incident in June 2023.

The incident that happened at the Vodafone Arena claimed the life of 21-year-old Komal Kumar and injured mother-daughter duo Ravina and Supriya Reshma.

The trio fell from the moving Ferris wheel when it allegedly picked up speed and the operator lost control of it.
