The Boxing Commission of Fiji has assured fans they can expect better standards of officiating during the Bula Boxing Promotion in Nadi next month.

This comes as questions were raised after fans and boxers did not agree to some decisions at a promotion in Nadi last weekend.

Abhay Chand fought Robin Hazelman in the middleweight category and the fight was awarded to Hazelman on a split points decision.

Chand, who thought he had won the fight, protested against officials after the decision was announced.

The judges had a discussion and 10 minutes later, the fight was declared a draw.

BCF chairman Dr Subhash Appana said according to him, it was the right thing to correct the decision during the promotion.

“We did a quick get-together and it so happened that on the scorecard we had a wrong tally. We had two options. One was to keep it quiet and let it pass and the other was to do the right thing and of course go against the tradition in boxing where you don’t change the decision,” Appana said.

“We just had to do the right thing and under the circumstances I think we did the right thing.”

He adds the work on judges continues.

“We are working on our judges. There are times when we have seen our judges have misfired a bit. All in all, through refreshers and all these depth sessions that we have together, I think they will improve tremendously. ”

Meanwhile, in the main bout at the promotion next month, Ronald Naidu will take on Nathan Singh for the lightweight title of Fiji. The promotion is scheduled for July 9 at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park.
