Three female Fiji Corrections Service officers were recognised for their service during the annual Corrections Day celebration last week.
The three, including 38-year-old Nai Naqaravatu, were among the 39 officers who received a medal for their long service, conduct and efficiency.
Speaking at the event, Infrastructure Minister Jone Usamate said a well-functioning corrections service was vital to the wellbeing and peace of mind of the people and the prosperity of the nation.
“Families in Fiji should sleep well at night knowing that our criminal justice system is designed entirely around their safety and security,” he said.
“That is our first and foremost priority. He said as a Government, they were building a system that was both strong enough to deter and punish crime and compassionate enough to rehabilitate wrong-doers so they could re-enter society after completing their sentences.
“Under Government, we have planned a complete redesign of the corrections services in Fiji, with the goal of transforming it into a more professional enterprise for the benefit of officers, inmates, families, and some of the most vulnerable in our communities.
“We have proved we can make these gains simultaneously.”
