The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) is stepping up preparations for the Local Government elections anticipated in September this year.

Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa said February was focused on finalising internal plans, while March would mark the start of stakeholder briefings and a nationwide awareness campaign.

“For the month of March, we are actually going to be having our briefings with stakeholders and we will brief our stakeholders on the preparation for the Local Government election that’s anticipated for September this year,” Ms Mataiciwa said.

“We are actually going to be rolling out our awareness in March.

She said while the municipal election was scheduled for September, the exact date has yet to be confirmed.

“In terms of dates, if we look at the law, the Local Government regulations, it talks about the elections to be held on a Saturday.

“So, in September we have four Saturdays.

“The exact date we are not sure but as we prepare towards the Local Government elections for the month of September, it could be any of the Saturdays of September.”

She added that a committee chaired by the PS for Local Government, comprising officials from the Fijian Elections Office and other stakeholders, was meeting regularly following the release of the Local Government elections regulations in December.

Ms Mataiciwa urged residents in the 13 municipalities to prepare as the awareness campaign rolls out in March ahead of the September polls.
