The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) says it is taking a firmer approach in dealing with fatal road incidents, charging offenders with vehicular manslaughter where reckless or dangerous driving leads to a person’s death.
The move comes amid a growing number of fatal cases and marks a shift away from the lesser charge of dangerous driving causing death.
According to the ODPP’s Serious Crime (Non-Sexual Violence Offences) Statistics for February 2026, two individuals have recently been charged with vehicular manslaughter.
In one case, a 30-year-old man is charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving without a valid licence. It is alleged he drove recklessly, causing the death of a 21-year-old man.
In a separate incident, a 22-year-old man also faces charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving without a valid driving licence. Prosecutors allege his reckless driving resulted in the death of a 13-year-old child.
The ODPP says the tougher charging approach reflects the seriousness with which authorities are treating fatal road incidents linked to reckless driving.
