Oceania body

AN idea has been mooted to form an Oceania body for the sport of bowls.

Bowls Fiji president Radhika Prasad attended the World Bowls meeting in Christchurch, New Zealand earlier this month where the issue was discussed.

Prasad said the constitution had been drafted and was with World Bowls laws committee chairman Kerry Clarke.

Prasad said Clarke was chosen as the interim secretary while she was the interim general secretary.

“Registration with Organisation Sports Federation of Oceania will be completed before next April,” she said.

“World Bowls president John Bell at the council meeting in Christchurch acknowledged the work done so far on the formation of Bowls Oceania.”

The formation of Bowls Oceania is well underway with Prasad finalising the constitution.

“There is still a lot of work to do in forming this association including

OSFO registration, communication set up, formalising board members, membership, and adoption of development strategy,” Prasad said.

“It is work in progress.

“The board of Bowls Oceania will be formed and I intend to oversee it from a regional director’s position.

“The initial board are hoping to sit down together at the next World Championship and discuss further.

“Since bowls is the only sport, competing in the Pacific Games that does not have its own Oceania association, it is important to form Bowls Oceania, giving our sport increased status, credibility and respect in this area.

“Our bid for International Olympic Committee recognition will be further enhanced by the establishment of Bowls Oceania.”
