The 5th International Maritime Security Symposium (IMSS) hosted by the Indonesian Navy in Makassar, South Suluwesi has tabled discussions on common concerns related to our ocean security.

According to the Republic of Fiji Navy’s social media post the IMSS coincided with the 4th Multilateral Naval Exercise KOMO- DO (MNEK) hosted by the Indonesian Navy held in the Suluwesi Straits.

“Included was the fleet review of 36 vessels including 18 foreign navy ships by TNI Commander in Chief Paglima Admiral Yudo Margono,”the navy stated.

The navy stated that participants were updated on the G20 Summit outcomes of maritime security; climate change; security of SLOCs and good order at sea; and humanitarian disaster relief assistance.

Indonesia’s UN ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani said it was critical for navies in supporting their nations blue economy and its sustainment, and acknowledged Fiji’s participation at the IMSS and as a global leader in the fight against climate change.

The RFN stated that admirals from defence forces also shared their plans with climate change resilience strategies related to HADR that included modern platforms and capabilities; enhanced naval readiness and coordination; specialised equipment and training; and enhanced interoperability amongst navies.

“Like in previous natural disasters in Fiji and the region, our defence partners have always responded in a timely manner with necessary support in the post disaster response, recovery and rehabilitation phases working with and alongside RFMF and Fiji’s lead national agency NDMO as we experienced during Cyclone Winston and Yasa.

“The MNEK and IMSS provided insights on national security and defence strategies that relate to climate change resilience and adaptation for Defence Forces.”
