The discovery of three tonnes of hard drugs at a ‘warehouse’ in Nadi paints a dreadful picture that for a long time nothing was done to prevent the arrival of these illegal substances onto our shores.
Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua said this as he expressed Government’s concern over Fiji’s growing drug problem.
“It is definitely for a lack of a better word, a concern,” said Mr Tikoduadua.
“I think it brings out this reality that for a very long time nothing was done to curtail these things from happening.
“People just don’t gain confidence overnight to be able to do these things.”
Mr Tikoduadua said Fiji’s drug problem was killing its people.
“A lot has been said about the drug problem and I will be the first to admit that we have a really big issue.
“But we have the opportunity here to really go out there, for a lack of a better word, to crush this because it is killing our people.
“It is killing people with the kind of criminology that is involved.”
He appealed to Fijians who may have valuable information on the storage facility to come forward to assist police investigators.
“Already the police are conducting investigations, they are talking to people who are of interest, and they are appealing to the public to come out.
“If there is no other incentive other than we need to keep this country safe.”
The methamphetamine seized last Sunday were wrapped in brown tapes and stored in 797 medium size containers.
They were discovered in a vacant house that is currently under construction.
