FOR years, Northern school rugby has carried the weight of being the forgotten force in Fiji’s high school competition.
Now Navatu Secondary School has changed that narrative.
The Cakaudrove school created Vodafone Super Deans history by becoming the first Northern school to reach the under-19 final, earning a place among the country’s established schoolboy rugby powers.
And it did so the hard way.
From the qualifiers to the semi-final, Navatu had to overcome three of the biggest names in Fiji school rugby — Queen Victoria School, Suva Grammar School and Ratu Kadavulevu School.
Now only one stands between Navatu and a national title — Lelean Memorial School.
For head coach Alipate Ravulo, the journey has been the ultimate examination of a Northern school determined to make its name on the national stage.
“The journey to the final has been the ultimate test for us,” Ravulo said.
“We had to overcome three of the nation’s high school giants — QVS in the qualifiers, Suva Grammar in the quarter-final and a determined RKS in the semi-final.”
The achievement is made even more significant by what Navatu does not have.
The school has no rugby ground of its own.
For Ravulo, that remains the most heartbreaking part of the journey.
But it has also become a symbol of what Northern schools continue to overcome in their pursuit of recognition in Fiji schoolboy rugby.
“Our school does not have a school ground,” he said.
“For me, that is the most heartbreaking part, but it also shows the struggles and determination of Northern schools to make their name in high school rugby.”
Against RKS, Navatu entered as the underdog against a side accustomed to playing on the biggest stage.
They refused to be intimidated.
“We came into the match as underdogs against a champion side like RKS, but we stuck to our game plan and held on for the win,” Ravulo said.
The 22-17 victory secured more than a place in the final.
It secured a place in history.
But Ravulo knows history alone will not win the title.
Navatu must now prepare for Lelean Memorial School in the U19 final at the HFC Bank National Stadium in Suva.
The coach said his players would celebrate the achievement, but only briefly.
“We will enjoy it, but we will not take this opportunity lightly. We will go back to the drawing board, see what we need to polish from our semi-final victory and come back focused and ready to take on LMS.”
Navatu has already broken the Northern barrier.
Now it has the chance to break another — by finishing its historic campaign as national champions.
