While many organised leisure activities to enjoy the first public holiday of this year, municipal workers went about their normal duties on Monday.
And one of the most important of these responsibilities is garbage collection.
For the Suva City Council, this means servicing about 28,000 registered properties and about 2500 households in informal communities, said Suva City Council acting CEO Azam Khan.
“This includes Nasinu Town boundary and Tacirua delegated boundary,” Mr Khan said.
“The city council has a six-day schedule prepared for collection and council employees work on Saturdays and public holidays on this service.”
He said this was important to maintain the cleanliness of amenities such as public conveniences.
“The municipal market and bus station have teams dedicated to upkeep the area.”
A special team is also dedicated to attending to urgent concerns and complaints during this period, he said.
“There is a special team that is responsible to manage the parks and civic auditorium during and after functions.
“On any public holiday, an estimated 30 employees shall be working.”
Meanwhile, in the Nasinu area, town council acting CEO Imraan Khan said a team was out on the field yesterday morning covering the Narere and Makoi areas.
He said that apart from the solid waste management team, their enforcement team was on call yesterday as well.
