IN its eight years of existence in Fiji, mobile service provider Digicel has reduced costs of mobile communication and its latest announcement will further reduce this cost for its prepay customers.
Digicel Fiji CEO Darren McLean yesterday said their prepay customers would no longer have to pay roaming charges while travelling overseas in some of the most popular destinations.
Mr McLean said Digicel prepay customers would now pay the low rates when roaming as they would when they were at home in Fiji.
Effective from yesterday, Digicel customers will now enjoy local rates for making calls, sending texts, and using data while roaming in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and Nauru.
“Many of our Fiji customers regularly travel to Australia and New Zealand and other Pacific markets, and they want to stay connected when they are overseas,” said Mr McLean.
“The common practice is for customers to switch SIMs when they land because they don’t want surprises with their credit. With our ‘Roam Like You’re Home’ service customers can use their mobiles with confidence when travelling.
“It’s like taking your Digicel network with you.
“It’ll be easy to use maps to find your hotel or business meeting venues, or to call home to say they’ve arrived safely — all using your Digicel Fiji SIM.
“We are offering the best possible roaming rates for our customers and if you are travelling and want to be connected, there is only one smart choice for your mobile provider and that is Digicel.
“We expect any short term decrease in revenue to be balanced by far more people using their mobiles when travelling.”
Charges are 42c per minute to make and receive calls while roaming in seven Pacific destinations, 24c to send an SMS, and 21c per Mb.
The SMS, data and rate per minute for calling is the same as Digicel customers would pay in Fiji.
Meanwhile, Digicel held a function at the Grand Pacific Hotel last night where it showcased the latest in the Samsung range, the Galaxy Note 7.
