Any Fijian who wishes to use a name that is not on his or her birth certificate will first need to amend the name following the process set out by the Births, Deaths and Marriages registry.
This was the word from Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem during an online forum with political parties this week. “You don’t need to anymore prepare a deed poll or a legal document from a lawyer,” he said.
“We will be able to provide you with a form and that form will be either through the Fijians Elections Office, submitted to the Births, Deaths and Marriages registry or the person can simply do it himself or herself.”
Mr Saneem said “a full nationwide registration drive” where the Fijian Elections Office team would go from “settlement to settlement, village to village, street to street” would take place from February 26, 2022, to April 2, 2022.
He also said a voter survey would take from January 20 to February 5 next year.
