Valelawa villagers in Dreketi, Vanua Levu, continue to live without access to electricity, relying instead on lanterns, candles and solar-powered lights to meet their daily needs.
Resident Sonam Devi said the village remains in darkness after sunset despite their efforts to connect to the national grid.
“It’s quite difficult for us,” Ms Devi said.
“I want my children to succeed, but without proper lighting, they cannot study well at night.”
Ms Devi said for many families, the absence of electricity poses significant challenges, especially for their children’s education.
“For now, I always tell my children to do their homework and studies during the day as much as possible,” she added.
Ms Devi said the village’s reliance on alternative light sources limits productivity and affects the quality of life.
“We keep praying for the day when power will finally reach Valelawa,” she added.
