THE Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission will not take any legal action against anyone.

Chairperson Marcus Brand said they were not focused on criminal prosecutions or legal proceedings.

“Our mandate is not about criminal prosecutions,” he said.

Mr Brand said they also did not have legal powers to summon an individual to court.

He said that instead, the commission’s focus was on the survivors of Fiji’s political upheavals, especially the trauma they had endured.

“Our commission is actually focused on taking into consideration the psychosocial health of the survivors.”

He said they were working closely with trauma and counselling experts to ensure that those who needed support would have access to it.

“If they want to speak to a counsellor, they will have access to do that.”

While some have questioned the commission’s work, he said the focus was not on victims or perpetrators but on everyone as survivors of the same traumatic events.

“It’s very important to give a safe space for people to talk.

“If someone wants to speak to us confidentially, in private, they have the option to do so.”

Mr Brand said that to protect this, the commission was investing in advanced security systems.

“We are building a very state-of-the-art, safe information management system.”

He said all data was protected and only authorised personnel would have access to them.
