Fuel prices are not allowed to go up yet, says Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
Speaking at an event in Nadi yesterday, Mr Rabuka reiterated Government’s stand on local fuel prices.
“I used to be a messenger for The Fiji Times,” he said.
“I was taught to ride a bike because we did not have enough money to pay for taxis.
“When I ran out of money, I would ask the business manager if he could lend me the bicycle overnight so I could go home and cycle back.
“Now we all may have to start thinking about bicycles as the fuel prices may go up.
“They are not allowed to go up yet.”
Following a Cabinet meeting in Suva this week, the Prime Minister said there should be no price increases.
“There should be no price hike,” he had said.
Mr Rabuka said the current situation did not warrant panic buying.
Meanwhile, a Fuel Advisory Committee and a Cabinet Subcommittee for Energy has been established.
The committee will be headed by the permanent secretary for Public Works
In a statement, Government confirmed these measures were in response to the escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and instability in global energy markets, which may affect international oil supply chains and fuel prices.
