No drug laboratories in Fiji, COMPOL tells US lawmakers

Fiji Police Force Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu told visiting members of the United States Congress on the drug situation in Fiji, stressing that there are no drug laboratories operating in the country.

Mr Tudravu said most of the “white drugs” seized by authorities originate from overseas.

“There is no laboratory here to manufacture drugs,” he said.

“We have established that some white substances seized were experimentally produced locally in very small quantities. However, we do not have the expertise or facilities to manufacture these drugs.”

A few individuals are attempting to ‘cook’ them based on information they learn online.”

Due to its geographical location, Fiji continues to be used as a transit point for drugs originating from larger countries in Europe and South America, he said.

Mr Tudravu said the recent drug seizure in Tavua was evidence that white drugs were being brought into the country by foreign nationals, adding that he was relieved those involved were not armed.

He called for enhanced information-sharing from United States law enforcement agencies to support Fiji’s efforts in combating the illicit drug trade.

“This is vital. We need to share whatever information we have,” he said.

“We are also seeking training opportunities for our police officers to strengthen their capacity to monitor and combat drug-related activities.”

The Police Commissioner also requested logistical support from the US Government to ensure officers on the ground are equipped with the appropriate tools, technology and resources to effectively address drug trafficking.
