RAROTONGA – Cook Islands Opposition will table a vote of no confidence against the Government in Parliament today.
The Democratic and One Cook Islands Party coalition partners hope Speaker of the House Niki Rattle will allow the motion, aimed at determining the confidence of MPs in the Cook Islands Party-led Government.
Murienua MP James Beer says once the motion is approved by the Speaker, the Opposition will highlight its misgivings about the way the country has been run under the current administration.
In another motion, the Opposition hopes to raise concerns over Prime Minister Henry Puna pursuing Cook Islands membership of the United Nations and potentially compromising New Zealand citizenship for Cook Islanders without first consulting the people of the Cook Islands.
Mr Beer said Mr Puna’s bid to hold talks with his New Zealand counterpart on the issue showed that what he had been quoted as saying about “giving up the New Zealand citizenship” could be true.
