Consultant national program manager for 7s rugby Gareth Baber said they had not picked a captain at this stage for the national 7s men’s team, however, hinted at veteran playmaker Jerry Tuwai taking over the captaincy role.
The side departed for France yesterday, for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
“We haven’t picked a captain at this stage,” he said.
“Obviously people will probably look at Jerry (Tuwai) as he has strong leadership in the group and is a big reason why he is included in the 15-member squad.”
Baber said Tuwai had the ability to not only motivate himself but others around him as well.
“But ultimately as well, you would look for three or four captains in a team.
“We’re over in France for over two weeks before we get into the games village.”
He said what they were looking at was for individuals to stand up and show their leadership qualities and that would be for Osea (Kolinisau) and Setefano (Cakau) to decide (captaincy) who they want them to lead on the field.
Baber said there were no plans for any scrimmaging sessions at this point.
“It is really about focusing on ourselves, we are taking 15 players because, in 7s, you will have injuries as well.
“We want to ensure that we have that quality in our training.”
