Suva’s Central Buses company has suspended its services along Gaji Rd after 6pm, saying the safety of drivers and passengers could no longer be guaranteed as a result of the repeated stoning of its buses.

The decision was prompted by another incident on Saturday night in the Lagilagi Housing area, where a bus was attacked during a routine trip around 9pm.

Central Buses CEO Mahendra Nair said the incident was frightening for those onboard and part of a pattern that had stretched back to December, including during the Christmas period.

“It didn’t just happen once, it happened many times,” Mr Nair said.

“Buses had been targeted by individuals believed to be intoxicated, who hurled stones and water at moving vehicles.”

Mr Nair said the latest attack was particularly dangerous, as the stone shattered glass and caused panic.

“If the glass hadn’t been there, someone would have been hit. It’s not safe.”

The matter was reported to police, and the Land Transport Authority was also informed. Mr Nair said the company had exhausted all options before deciding to suspend services.

“Drivers feared for their lives during these incidents, while passengers — often tired workers heading home — were left shaken by the sudden attacks.”

Mr Nair said the decision to stop evening services was not taken lightly, but protecting lives had to come first.

He said services would not resume during those hours until it’s safe for passengers and drivers.
