The High Court is not satisfied that a former corrections officer accused of killing his de facto partner will surrender himself or appear to face the charge if granted bail.
This was one reason given by Justice Usaia Ratuvili in his ruling against Epeli Laqeni’s bail application.
Mr Laqeni is charged with a count of murder allegedly committed between September 3 and 5 this year at Nakasi in Nausori.
In his application, Mr Laqeni expressed concern that the conditions at the remand centre were unsuitable for him.
He raised concerns about overcrowding and an increasing number of HIV cases at the centre, adding he was being kept in an infirmary designed to house six beds but currently occupied by 12 remandees.
Mr Laqeni also sought bail to assist his Legal Aid lawyer prepare for trial.
However, the State maintained its objection, citing strong circumstantial evidence, the full admissions in his caution interview, and his early admission to a police officer.
Justice Ratuvili said it was not in the best interests of justice to grant bail.
Mr Laqeni has been further remanded and is expected to take a plea on December 23.
