PLAYERS who represented the Fijiana 7s team at the 2024 Olympic Games are all off-contract and the Fiji Rugby Union will re-establish its selection process soon.
With four years remaining until the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the FRU has ample time to assemble and develop a team of coaches and players who will make the national women’s 7s side.
FRU interim chair Peter Mazey said they had completed their post-Olympic review with coach Saiasi Fuli, the manager and captain Raijeli Daveua.
“The women, their contracts finished after the Olympics, so we must re-establish and go into selection,” Mazey said.
Mazey said the selection of players would be decided soon once they were clear on what coach Fuli planned to do.
“That’s the decision we will discuss next week.
“Fuli has indicated that he doesn’t want to stay on and wants to move back into 15s or development, so you must respect that. He gave a lot of time to that Olympic team and things did not go as well as we expected which was quite sad.
“We will get all the coaches together and start looking at what the process will be.
“We got several 7s tournaments over the next few months, especially with the Fiji Bitter Sevens Series and that gives us a good opportunity to review everybody’s performance.
“There’s a lot of new people out there, there’s some new girls and they need to be given the opportunity. We got a four-year lead-up now to the next Olympics,” Mazey said.
Two players including Kolora Lomani and Talei Wilson who played for Fijiana 7s during the Paris Olympics have been named in the Vodafone Fijiana XV team for the upcoming Tests in Scotland and the Netherlands.
