National Fire Authority CEO Sowane Puamau says urbanisation has brought the authority new challenges.

Mr Puamau said those included high-rise buildings, congestion and the lack of space.

Speaking at the National Fire Quality Awards 2023 on Thursday, Mr Puamau said there was a need for urban search and rescue skills and equipment.

He said another challenge was the enforcement of penalties for non-compliance or breach of approval.

“Also the increase in inspection of installed firefighting equipment.

“And the increase in fire awareness training to high-rise building users.”

Mr Puamau said the authority had to heighten fire-safe measures during high-rise rescue training.
