The National Fire Authority (NFA) officially launched its first emergency pre-hospital ambulance yesterday.
The launch, officiated by Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, was supported by a substantial government investment, with an additional $2.1million allocated for ambulance services in the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
Mr Nalumisa highlighted the progress made since the establishment of the National Ambulance Service Act in 2010, which laid the foundation for the services now being provided by the NFA.
He also said that over the past five financial years, ambulance calls accounted for 26 per cent of all calls received by the NFA, ranking second only to private fire alarm calls.
“From January this year, we have attended to 170 fire emergencies and 152 road accidents,” Mr Nalumisa said.
He also outlined the Government’s unwavering support for the NFA, with a total of $6.1 million allocated for the Authority’s operations.
“From its funding in the last fiscal year, National Fire Authority procured two new ambulances, and with the budgetary allocations for this fiscal year, the NFA is looking to purchase more ambulances to service the people of Fiji.
“Through these allocations, we are reaffirming our belief that every community in Fiji deserves state-of-the-art ambulance emergency services.
“We will invest in ensuring that all the personnel are adequately trained, well-equipped, and primed to deliver timely emergency healthcare to all corners of our beautiful islands.”
