Marko Stamenic has become the latest Kiwi footballer to sign with a top-tier European club, joining Danish Superliga side FC Copenhagen from Wellington’s Western Suburbs.

The 18-year-old midfielder was invited to trial with Denmark’s most successful club after catching the eye for New Zealand during last year’s Under-17 World Cup in Brazil.

Stamenic flew to Denmark last month to train with FC Copenhagen after his original trial was cut short by the Covid-19 lockdown.

Stamenic is one of New Zealand’s most exciting young players. He was set to earn a call-up to Danny Hay’s All Whites squad for the March friendlies against Bahrain and Oman, only for the games to be cancelled.

The Ole Football Academy product will start out playing for FC Copenhagen’s under-19 team.
