New road traffic laws and penalties have been in effect since 22 January 2026, following the gazetting of the Land Transport (Fees and Penalties) (Amendment) Regulations 2026.

The amendments, made under the Land Transport Act 1998 after consultation with the Land Transport Authority, introduce revised fines, demerit points and suspension penalties for several traffic offences.

One of the key changes is the introduction of penalties for failure to stop and weigh. Under the new regulations, a first offence carries a $300 fixed penalty and one demerit point, increasing to $600 and two demerit points for a second offence, and $900 with three demerit points for subsequent offences, with higher maximum penalties also applying.

The regulations also revise penalties for illegal parking or stopping, now attracting a $100 fixed penalty and one demerit point, with maximum penalties including fines and possible suspension.

Speeding penalties have also been restructured. Drivers exceeding the speed limit by less than 15km/h now face a $50 fine and one demerit point, while speeding by 15–29km/h attracts a $75 fine and two demerit points. Exceeding the speed limit by 30km/h or more carries a $100 fine and three demerit points, with all categories subject to higher maximum penalties and possible licence suspension.

The amended regulations were signed into law by Ro Filipe Tuisawau, Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport.

Authorities are urging motorists to familiarise themselves with the updated penalties, noting that the changes are aimed at strengthening road safety, improving compliance and reducing dangerous driving behaviour across Fiji.
