The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has confirmed that new traffic fees and penalties for key road offences have come into effect today, 23 January 2026, as part of efforts to improve road safety and strengthen compliance with traffic laws.

In a statement, the LTA said the revised penalties apply to speeding, illegal parking or stopping, and failure to stop and weigh, offences which authorities say continue to contribute to road accidents, congestion, and infrastructure damage.

Under the new schedule, speeding fines have been increased across all categories.

Motorists exceeding the speed limit by less than 15 kilometres per hour will now face a $50 fine, up from $25.

Those driving between 15km/h and 29km/h over the limit will be fined $75, compared to the previous $40.

Drivers exceeding the speed limit by 30km/h or more will now be fined $100, up from $60.

Significant changes have also been made to illegal parking and stopping offences, with the fine increased sharply from $20 to $100.

The LTA said the increase reflects the ongoing impact of illegal parking on traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and access for emergency services.

Penalties for failure to stop and weigh, an offence commonly associated with heavy and commercial vehicles, have also been revised.

A first offence will now attract a $300 fine, a second offence a $600 fine, and subsequent offences a $900 fine.

The authority said repeated non-compliance poses serious risks to road infrastructure and public safety.

The LTA has urged all road users to familiarise themselves with the new fees and penalties and to comply with traffic laws at all times.

Motorists are reminded that the revised penalties are intended not as a revenue measure, but as a deterrent to unsafe driving behaviour and a step toward reducing road fatalities and improving overall road discipline across Fiji.
