The International Day of Seafarers celebrated on June 25 pays homage to the millions of seafarers who keep the global markets functioning and the supply chains going around the world.
To celebrate the important day, seafarers in Fiji gathered at the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies (PCMS) in Suva to remember those who have passed on and those who continue to sail the vast oceans.
This year’s International Day of Seafarers theme is “Navigating the Future: Safety First”.
A major highlight at the seafarer’s day celebration last week was the announcement of the new Bachelors in Nautical Science Class 1 and Class 2 Master program at the PCMS.
This program will allow all Fijian seafarers with the opportunity to expand their qualification and competency in Fiji and not overseas.
In previous years, many Fijians have had to obtain their Class 1 and Class 2 Masters overseas as the program wasn’t offered in the country, now they have the privilege to attain such qualification here.
Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies director, Captain Tevita Robanakadavu said the centre was thrilled to announce for the first time ever its Bachelor in Nautical Science Class 1 and Class 2 Master program.
“To all Class 3 Master /watchkeeper certificate of competency holders, prepare yourself for an unparalleled educational journey that will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the maritime industry,” he told seafarers in attendance at the event.
“Our program promises comprehensive training, expert guidance and practical experience tailored to meet the demands of modern navigation and ship management.
“This is where you will gain in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for navigating today’s vessels.”
He told current seafarers and students to not miss the opportunity to advance their career and to make waves in the maritime world.
The new program will start on February next year. || New bachelors program for seafarers || SEAFARERS DAY
