The proposed People’s First Party has no connection to former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum or former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, its founders say.

Opposition Leader and party co-founder Inia Seruiratu dismissed claims that the new party was backed by leaders of the deregistered FijiFirst Party, describing the assertions as untrue.

“That is not true,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“Our proposed political party has nothing to do with the former leaders. We have broken clean from that arrangement, the party was deregistered, and they are not part of our party.

“Whether they will form another party, that is beyond us, that is something that you probably can ask them.

“But let me assure every Fijian that People’s First Party has nothing to do with the former leaders.”

Asked whether the founders of FijiFirst might seek to join the new party, Mr Seruiratu replied: “No, they will not join.”

Meanwhile, responding to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s call for integrity and respect ahead of elections, Mr Seruiratu agreed.

“We contest on ideas, and most importantly, sticking to principles and ethics. That is very important to all of us, because every promise and the words that we say, will continue to haunt us in the future.

“And that is why we need to approach the elections with wisdom and ensure that it’s conducted within the laws that are set, and of course with integrity as well.”
