THE Fijian Elections Office and the Foreign Affairs Ministry have signed an updated memorandum to strengthen overseas voter registration and awareness efforts in a landmark move to expand electoral inclusion.
Signed last Thursday, the agreement formalises collaboration between the two institutions and outlines clear responsibilities for Fiji’s diplomatic missions to support the FEO in delivering voter services abroad.
This includes facilitating registration, disseminating election-related information and providing logistical support for FEO staff deployed internationally.
Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa described the signing as a significant milestone in making Fiji’s elections more accessible to its overseas citizens.
“This MOU is more than just a document. It’s a commitment to every Fijian living overseas,” Ms Mataiciwa said.
“It ensures that no matter where our citizens reside, they have the opportunity to register, stay informed and vote in national elections.”
More than 200,000 Fijians are estimated to be living abroad, and officials say the agreement marks a critical step in ensuring their voices are heard in the democratic process.
Foreign Affairs permanent secretary Dr Raijeli Taga welcomed the renewed partnership, reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to working closely with the Elections office.
