Students and teachers of Toko Sanatan Primary School in Tavua now have a new sports facility to call their own, following the official handover of the Toko Sanatan Multipurpose Court, Stage 1, by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, last week.
Speaking at the event, Minister Saukuru said the project marked a significant milestone not only for the school but also for the growth of sports and community development in the Western Division.
“Today is a significant day for you the students of Toko Sanatan Primary School, the day that I know all of you have been waiting for, to use your new sporting facilities, and a significant day for the sports sector in Fiji, as we officially hand over the Toko Sanatan Primary School Multipurpose Hall, Stage 1,” he said.
The $32,000 project, funded through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, is part of the government’s commitment to promoting sports, youth empowerment, and healthy lifestyles.
“This project is more than just a multipurpose court, it is a place where new talents will be born, as it is an investment in you, the students of Toko Sanatan Primary School,” Saukuru said.
He said the new facility would not only encourage greater participation in sports but could also nurture future national athletes who would represent Fiji with pride on the international stage.
Beyond sports, the court will serve as a safe space for community activities, leadership development, and youth engagement.
“Youth face many challenges today from unemployment to social pressures and we believe that sports can be a positive force for change. It can help keep young people engaged in meaningful activities and away from negative influences.”
Minister Saukuru added that the project aligns with the government’s National Sports and Physical Activity Policy, which focuses on accessible sporting infrastructure and increased participation at all levels.
He urged students to make full use of the new facility.
“This facility belongs to you. Use it well. Train hard, play fair, and let this court be a stepping stone to your dreams. Whether you aspire to represent Fiji in sports, stay active for health reasons, or simply enjoy the camaraderie of playing with friends, this space is yours to grow and excel,” he concluded.
Saukuru also thanked all partners and stakeholders involved in the project, commending their continued dedication to youth and sports development in Fiji.
