The Education Bill 2025 introduces strict new requirements for the reporting of sexual allegations involving teachers and students, reinforcing the government’s commitment to student safety and accountability in schools.
The Bill, that was tabled in Parliament last Friday states, Under Section 172 of the Bill, any employing authority that dismisses or receives the resignation of a teacher following a sexual misconduct allegation must notify the Fiji Teacher Registration Board within seven days.
The notification must include key details such as the names of the school and teacher, the nature and particulars of the allegation, the date of dismissal or resignation, and the reasons provided by both parties.
Failure to comply with the mandatory reporting timeline is considered an offence. Employers who breach the provision face fines of up to $1,000 for a first offence and $5,000 for subsequent offences.
