A TWIST has been spun in the men’s competition of the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s this year; there will be no pre-allocated pools for the tournament.
This was revealed by tournament organiser Koli Korovulavula yesterday.
Korovulavula said the new format would see 72 men’s teams decide how they would let competition unfold.
“This is the first time that teams are going to walk into the competition without knowing any pools; we threw away the pools, we discarded the pools,” Korovulavula told the media.
He explained the 72 teams had the chance to decide how the flow of competition would progress as the 72 teams would play in 36 matches.
“We’ll just have 72 teams who decide where they go so from the very first game, they decide what the next game is.
While there were certain rules that governed those who won or lost, it will be all hands on deck from the first match.
“There’s 36 games because of 72 teams, they’ll play game number one or game number 36. Your opponent will be decided on the draw.
He added the teams will find out who they play when they randomly select their opponents from 72 specially designed replica beer cans.
“We think it’s an exciting way to do it.
“We’re excited to have this new format presented to Fiji and to the world.”
