THE National Fire Authority spent a quarter of its budget on the acquisition of a Mercedes-Zetros fire truck.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony yesterday, Minister for Local Government and Housing Maciu Nalumisa said the new truck was a strategic response to the growing pressures on Fiji’s fire and emergency services, particularly in urban areas.
He said the Mercedes-Zetros Port Rescue Fire Truck will be stationed at the Suva Fire Station, where it will play a critical role in fire safety within the Suva CBD, protecting key infrastructure like oil depots, and responding to emergencies involving tourist cruise liners at Suva ports.
He did not say how much it cost but pointed out that over 60 percent of Fiji’s population, or more than 560,000 people, now live in urban settlements, increasing the demand for firefighting resources, better equipment, and improved emergency response strategies.
“The scarcity of fire hydrants, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas, further adds to this challenge,” Mr Nalumisa said.
“In many instances, our firefighters must search for alternative water sources, losing precious minutes that could mean the difference between containment and devastation.
“Additionally, Fiji’s unique geographical layout — with many communities located far from reliable water sources —poses further difficulties.
“Despite these challenges, our firefighters continue to serve with unwavering dedication.
“However, they cannot operate effectively without the right tools and resources.”
He said this investment not only improves public safety but also strengthens investor confidence, making Suva a more secure place for business and economic growth.
