THE USP Raiders women’s rugby league team are the new champions of the Open Women’s division at the Fijian Cup Rugby League Nines.
The talented USP side overpowered the Police Sharks 21-6 in the main final to clinch the top prize at Lawaqa Park yesterday.
It was the perfect start for the Raiders, who ran in two early tries through Naomi Tegu and Salote Natuna, with Kinisalote Vusawa adding the conversion. Police remained scoreless at halftime.
Led by their Bulikula players, USP maintained control in the second spell. Asena Rokomarama crossed for their third try before Tegu sealed the win with her second of the afternoon. Police’s lone try came from Adi Kakua, with Vilorina Drotini converting.
USP Raiders coach Asaeli Saravaki praised his players for their effort and commitment.
“Thank the girls for all their effort and hard work,” he said. Saravaki, who was unwell, thanked God for giving him the strength to be on the field and motivate his team.
Meanwhile, Laselase Cowboys claimed third place with a 13-4 win over Namoli. Captain Vatiseva Cavuru said the Fijian Cup Rugby League Nines was the perfect off-season training platform for her squad, which is made up of the Kadavu women’s rugby team.
