NEWLY appointed Cricket Fiji chief executive officer Anushil Kumar says the challenges facing the organisation are a major factor in his decision to take on the role.
With more than a decade of experience in the sporting sector, 31-year-old Kumar believes the opportunity to help grow cricket in Fiji comes at a crucial time for the sport.
Speaking during the official announcement of his appointment in Suva yesterday, Kumar said he was motivated by the chance to make a difference in a sport that often operates outside the spotlight.
“During the interview process, I learned that the organisation was going through a lot of challenges,” Kumar said.
“Having been in the sporting industry for more than 10 years, it has always been one of my goals to help a smaller sport grow and show that we exist in Fiji as well.
“It was those challenges that motivated me even further to accept the role when it was offered to me.”
Kumar described his appointment as both an honour and a responsibility, thanking the Cricket Fiji board for placing its trust in him.
“I feel honoured, humbled, and excited. It is a privilege to be entrusted with this responsibility, and I am grateful for the confidence the board has shown in me. I am looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity to contribute to the growth of cricket in Fiji,” he said.
Although only recently assuming office, Kumar said planning for the role had already begun before his official appointment.
“Since I was offered the role, I started planning and there is a lot of work ahead,” he said.
“Since assuming office, I have been reviewing different areas, identifying what is working well and what needs improvement and I have plans in place, but it will take time to implement those changes.”
Kumar’s appointment comes as Cricket Fiji looks to strengthen participation, improve development pathways and expand the game’s reach across the country.
He remains confident that a strategic approach can help reshape the future of cricket in Fiji.
