New Aussie Rules season

AUSSIE Rules football (AFL) Fiji started its 2015 season on a bright note last weekend at the University of the South Pacific grounds.

The season began with the Bulakick program that provided boys and girls from 4 to 11 years in age to learn the game through fun and safe activities.

For the first time AFL Fiji officially launched the women’s competition where the Royal Eagles played the Qio Vula.

The Royal Eagles proved too strong for the Qio Vula side thumping them 73-2.

In the men’s opening round Cats Kaukauwa showed why they will be favourites to win the title this year after a comfortable win against Giant Gata team 78-37.

AFL Fiji national coach Myke Ted Leahy said this season’s competition would be tough.

“This season is really going to be competitive as all the teams in the men’s and women’s division would be well prepared,” Leahy said.

“Our development has been going well and we just recently had three players who were in the AFL Pacific side that competed at the U16 AFL Championship in Quessland.

“These players were Simione Kuruvoli from Gospel High School, Josua Modrau and Isimeli Lagivalu from Lelean Memorial School. We hope to get more players selected in the Pacific team in the future.”

All the games this season will be played at Malie Park USP.
