World Netball (WN) and Netball Australia (NA) are intensifying efforts to secure netball’s place in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
In a statement released on Tuesday, WN chief executive officer Fiona Harold, NA CEO Stacey West, and NA president Liz Ellis AO shared details of their recent virtual meeting with Brisbane 2032 CEO Cindy Hook and director of sport Brendan Keane.
The meeting, initially scheduled to be held in person, was moved online due to adverse weather conditions in Brisbane.
Nevertheless, the discussions proved fruitful, focusing on the potential inclusion of netball in the Olympics.
Harold emphasised the importance of the meeting, noting that World Netball had conducted a feasibility study and consulted multiple stakeholders to ensure the bid was in the best interest of the sport.
“Netball’s inclusion in the Olympics would greatly enhance the Olympic movement and significantly contribute to World Netball’s core strategies,” she stated.
NA’s Stacey West underscored the sport’s continued growth, particularly in Australia, where netball is the leading sport for women and girls.
“We want to play on the world’s biggest sporting stage at the Olympics in our home country and we’re doing the work to see what’s possible,” West said.
World Netball and Netball Australia are also in ongoing talks with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) to advance their goal of Olympic inclusion.
