ENSURING the transition period is guided by transparency, inclusivity and firm alignment with the long-term development goals of netball in Fiji is high on the list of priorities for Netball Fiji’s transition committee chair, Vasiti Vugakoto.

The transition period for the national body will be guided by three key areas reflecting the intent of the new constitution and the long term interests of the sport such as restoring strong and transparent governance, protection and continuity of high performance, development and competition programs and to rebuild trust and unity within the netball community with a focus on strengthening relationships with member associations, stakeholders and development partners.

The committee met for its first official meeting last Saturday where the confirmation of Vugakoto, RubyAnn Sorovaki and Alumeci Vosararawa-Sachs for the roles of chair, co-chair and secretary, respectively, were made.

Assisted by committee members Dorothy Prasad, Myrtle Smith, Courtney Bitu, Kitione Waqavonovono and co-opted legal adviser Wati Seeto, the group’s main focus is to oversee what Netball Fiji calls “a structured program of reforms under its new constitution over the coming months.”

In a statement released by Netball Fiji on Monday night, Vugakoto explained the progress to this point involved navigating through difficult times however the bigger picture remained firmly in mind.

“While the road to this point has not been easy, the transition marks a decisive step forward for Fiji netball,” Vugakoto said.

“The adoption of the new constitution demonstrates our members’ commitment to a stronger future for the sport.

“Our role now is to ensure the transition is transparent, inclusive and firmly aligned with the long term development goals for netball in Fiji.”

The new constitution was voted in unanimously when Netball Fiji held its Annual General Meeting on Saturday, February 28.
