The International Netball Festival has returned to Lautoka, bringing together 36 teams from Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand for a week of exciting matches and cultural exchange.
With finals set for Tuesday, the festival promises thrilling netball action and unforgettable experiences for players and fans
International Netball Co-Coordinator Nick Rushton highlighted the unique charm of Fiji as a destination for this festival.
“We host four festivals a year, and we’ve always returned to Fiji in December because it’s such a beautiful part of the world,” he shared.
“Teams come to play netball and immerse themselves in the local culture, creating memories that last a lifetime.”
The festival features four grades U13, U15, U18, and Open categories.
Teams from Yasawa and various parts of Fiji, and international squads from Australia and New Zealand are competing. The matches have already produced some thrilling moments.
In the opening games, Shine On Queens delivered a commanding 19-3 victory over Aussie Hino.
The intensity continued as Shine On Queens maintained their winning streak with an 18-11 triumph over Bradford Hotel Aussie Opens. Meanwhile, Lomaiviti Stars narrowly fell to Rockhampton Grammar in a gripping 19-17 clash. The Silverettes bounced back to defeat Burnie Diamonds 11-7.
Rushton said the festival is more than just a sporting event.
“The girls come for a nine-day tour, and four days are dedicated to netball. The rest of the time, they experience Fiji’s unique culture,” he explained.
Australian and New Zealand teams also brought donations for the local teams, fostering a spirit of generosity and unity.
“We want the girls to understand different cultures and lifestyles. It’s not just about competition; it’s about interaction, learning, and building connections,” Rushton concluded.
