HUNDREDS of mourners gathered at the Nabua Methodist Church yesterday, to bid farewell to the late Unaisi Rokoura.
A former national netball representative and coach who tragically lost her life while searching for freshwater mussels in Navuso near Nausori.
Among the attendees were former national netball players, members of the netball community, as well as family and friends.
Rokoura, who was just 47 years old at the time of her passing, was with three other women at the time, one of them a 34-year-old who was also swept away, resulting in her demise.
The news of her untimely death was met with shock and sadness, with many expressing their disbelief at the loss of such a dedicated and talented individual.
Ruby-Ann Sorovaki, the President of Netball Fiji, paid tribute to Rokoura, describing her as not only a phenomenal athlete and coach but also a mentor and friend to many.
She highlighted Rokoura’s significant contributions to the sport of netball in Fiji, noting her years of dedication and commitment to its development.
“While we are saddened by her passing, we are grateful to someone who has dedicated years of her life to the development of netball in Fiji. Thank you for all that you’ve done Una, you will be missed.” said Sorovaki.
Rokoura’s sporting achievements were truly remarkable, having represented Fiji in multiple international tournaments including six Pacific Games, two Commonwealth Games, and two Netball World Championships.
She also captained the Fiji Pearls from 1997 to 2006, leaving a lasting legacy on the court.
In addition to her success in netball, Rokoura was a versatile athlete who excelled in other sports such as hockey, rugby 15s, basketball, and beach volleyball.
Sorovaki adds her passion for coaching and developing young athletes led her to take on various coaching and administrative roles within the sporting community, both in Fiji and abroad.
“Throughout her career, Rokoura inspired countless individuals with her dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
“Her impact on the sporting community, both on and off the court, will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.”
Rokoura was laid to rest at the Lovonilase cemetery yesterday.
